Fenella

Later - abandoned, felted, to be turned into a bag!! One day...

Knitting ADD

Unfortunately my knitting ADD continues. Have rethought ALL the projects I'm currently working on....

So now:
My main project is "Fenella" from RYC Classic Tweed, in Rowan Harris Tweed Aran (lavender/heather kind of colour). I've never been entirely convinced about the RYC Classic series but actually I really like this book. Fenella has quite a current shape (actually an old 70s/80s shape, but relatively fashionable at present), and I love tweed yarn. Photo of my progress pending - but I have to do 72 rounds of ribbing so I'm having to be very focussed to maintain my attention on her! I have modified the pattern to work in the round from the bottom up and I'll divide to work back and forth when I get to the sleeves.

My next pending project is also going to be from RYC Classic Tweed, and I'm just tossing up whether to use stash (either sirdar black aran or ryc cashsoft dk - the latter will require pattern mods), OR whether to buy some Rowan Wool Tweed. I get paid this week. Tempting.

I'm still working on something for my sister at knitting group; and have somewhat shelved the 80s sleeveless sweater (not very seasonal).

Working at home today before a hosp appointment this afternoon. Have three big tasks to do; might reward myself with a round of Fenella between each one!

rethinking, listing

While I was folding the washing on Tuesday night my thoughts about my knitting projects unsnarled and I suddenly felt more focussed about all the projects I've got on the go. So:

Current Projects:

Samples for C&G module 1
Gift for my sister
80s sleeveless sweater in Debbie Bliss silk.
Umbilical cord hat in Debbie Bliss merino aran.

In The Queue:

Cape from Classic Weekend in Rowan Scottish Tweed aran, lavender colour (NOT in the black acrylic/wool mix; both the colour and texture of the scottish tweed will work better for this pattern).

"Bridges" from Rowan 42 in black aran weight soft acrylic/wool mix (NOT in the vintage yellow mohair - that needs an ironic, 80s kind of pattern)

Vogue ribbed turtleneck in yellow mohair?

Short sleeved cabled wrap cardigan from Classic Weekend in yellow Debbie Bliss merino aran

Another 3 hour sweater in RYC dk cashsoft.

Rowan handknit cotton vest, own design. (A summer knit really so will return to it after xmas).

Ahhh, that feels better!

New Projects and Old

Wore Juliet to work today and got a compliment, which is always reassuring. And not of the "did you make that yourself?" variety! Finished Juliet in the car on the way to Hull on Saturday; made one error which was that I attached the button loops on the man's side rather than the womens. Considered undoing it, then thought "why do we have a man's and woman's side anyway?" so decided to keep it, and turn Juliet into a kind of gender deconstructionist statement. Waiting til someone notices to have that conversation with them. No one has so far.

Pattern details:
Juliet; pattern available from Zephyr to download for a small fee. Link is a few blog entries below.
Yarn: Wendy Chunky 75% acrylic 25% wool. Used just short of 3 100 g balls. Very cheap project in a seasonal colour. Kind of ashamed to admit my habit of using wool/acrylic mixes...
Needles: 6mm so a fast knit.
Buttons: Vintage, from button box.
Mods: Made the bottom garter stitch edging longer to balance the cardigan - felt it was too short with just 3 rows so did 6.

So - after feeling holier than thou for finishing Juliet (and numerous other projects recently) I did yet another C&G sample - I will eventually finish Module 1 - and then cast on for a new project yesterday. Its the cape from RYC Classic Weekend. I'm knitting it in...you guessed it! Acrylic/wool mix (wool rich though) in black, aran weight, from stash. There are lots of capes in the shops at the moment and I've been hankering after them, but also wanting to save my pennies.

Also made more progress on the 80s sleeveless sweater, although had a colour consultation recently as a birthday gift and its not really the right colour for me, so might end up gifted. Possibly. It won't be everyone's idea of wearable.

Train Knitting and Tinking...

Picked up "Juliet" again this morning as have more yarn now. Decided I would try to get another pattern repeat done on the train this morning. No such luck. In my half asleep state I judged where I was in the pattern incorrectly, did two and half rows and then had to tink back to where I'd begun. By the time I'd done that I'd arrived at work! My fingers are itching to pick it up again, but its lunch time now and I've got a seminar to run this afternoon. That train journey home is calling me!

To fill in time while waiting for extra yarn for "Juliet" I knitted another C&G sample (edging), and the Umbilical Cord Hat from S&B Vol 1 in Patons Washed Haze aran cotton from stash for a new baby gift. Photo pending. I need to do another two of these in the next few weeks, as babies appear to be being born weekly amongst my friends at the moment!

Expecting to have some car knitting time this weekend as travelling to Hull and back again; but looks like it will be finishing "Juliet" unless I get a lot done on her tomorrow.

Back in Bromley

Managed to post some pictures of what I've been working on this week. First, the City & Guilds samples for Module 1 of Distance Knitting (which I've been doing for about 18 months and still haven't completed...). Significant progress made this week!
Then, Juliet, which is coming along well and would have been finished if I hadn't run out of yarn. Will get another ball tomorrow (and hopefully match the dyelot), and knit another 4 or so pattern repeats.
And lastly, the 80s sleeveless top in Debbie Bliss silk. Pulled it across the needles a bit so the openwork vertical stripes can (sort of) be seen.
And at knitting group today I got a lovely birthday present of Interweave's "Favourite Sock Patterns" and 2 balls of Regia yarn! So a pair of socks will need to be make at some point.

Knitting on holiday...

Having a week off - spending part of the week in Blackpool (Illuminations and, unfortunately, Tory party conference, which hubby is attending) and Thursday/Friday at home. Travelled up by way of Yorkshire, which gave me a chance to check Hammonds in Hull for special offers. Bought a knitting bag (v bright retro print) and a ball of Patons grey alpaca/wool mix Inca to finish off a Teva Durham knit from last year which I've just been so unsure about - the assymetric neck vest. I made it longer than recommended as I have a long torso, then didn't have enough yarn to crochet the edgings. I knitted it in Rowan Big Wool, in a dark grey and can't match the shade now, so going for a complementary grey. Might try it out, might ebay it... I don't like knitting Teva's patterns although I like her design style. I actually don't think her patterns are well written (although it might be my interpretation of them) as items never come out with a good fit; whereas, for example, everything I've knitted by Stephanie Japel fits and looks good.

One of my knitting group members inspired me to try ebay for those items I've finished but don't really like, so I tried it this week with the black mohair paris loop (I got the yarn I used for that for free so it seemed worth a try). It's sold but not for very much - be interesting to see if Rowan yarn and a Teva pattern meant an item would sell for more.

Making steady progress on the vintage silk knit and on "juliet" so piccies pending. Might to try post a piccie of the Illuminations as well, particularly for foreign visitors of this blog.

Also gifted the two tone ribbed shrug to a more petite friend, as it was too short in the back for me really - looked nice on her when she tried it on in the restaurant we were at!
